  • MIALHE, Pierre Toussaint Frederic (1810-1881) - TORRE, Jose de la - MAY, Bernardo.

Plano Pintoresco De La Habana with Mapa Historica Pintoresco Moderno de la Isle De Cuba. Berlin: B. May y CA, 1853.

One fine folding tinted lithographed map ( 18 x 23 inches)

This scarce pair of maps of Cuba and Havana, surrounded by views and historic scenes of the island, were originally published in Pierre Toussaint Frederic Miahle's (1810-1881)

Viaje pintoresco al rededor de la Isla de Cuba, ca 1848, which was subsequently pirated by Bernardo May as Album Pintoresco de la Isla de Cuba in the 1850. In 1853 both Mialhe had unsuccessfully sued May for breach of copyright and demanded "the sequestration of the May-plagiarized albums, notification to the press to stop advertisements of said views,
    and 20,000 pesos as damages".

May denied plagiarism on the grounds that ". after all, ladies in carriages, street sellers, churches, monuments, and landscapes were all there in full view to any artist who cared to paint them". The maps of Cuba and Havana were also copied from an 1847 map by Jose M. de la Torre. Following the failed lawsuit May reissued his volume in 1855

  • First book about production of the SUGAR in CUBA. Printed year: 1797 Title: Memoria sobre el mejor mode de fabricar el azucar que en junta celebrada sociedad patriotica havana 1797 First Cuban book about SUGAR FABRICATION. Super very rare Cuban Book and one of the more importants. Cuba has a long-established scientific history which could be considered to have started with the publication in 1673, in Spain, of the first scientific tome written in Cuba by Lazaro de Flores, a physician. The first scientific paper published in Cuba itself was in 1714 and was on astronomical observations. The founding of the Real y Pontificia "Universidad de San Gerónimo? in Havana in 1728 for the study of medicine formally established medical scientific investigation and this was followed by the founding of the Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País based in the scientific output of the universities, in 1793.  The year 1797 is considered the year of scientific explosion because of the number of scientific papers emanating from La Habana. They included "Disertación sobre algunas plantas cubanas", "Oración inaugural en elogio de la cirugía", "Disertación sobre la fiebre maligna llamada vulgarmente vómito negro"," Discurso sobre las buenas propiedades de la tierra bermeja para el cultivo de la caña"," Memoria sobre el mejor modo de fabricar azúcar  and, in July that year, the first defense of the theories of Copernicus was published. By 1826 there had developed a significant life-sciences scientific establishment which was evidenced in part by the launching of the Medical Journal of Havana in 1840 and the creation of the Real Academia de Ciencias Médicas, Físicas y Naturales de la Habana in 1861. In 1867 the Academia de Ciencias in Havana was founded, followed by the Sociedad Para Estudios Clínicos in 1879, representing the first multi-disciplinary health sciences organization in Cuba.
