May y CA, 1853.One fine folding tinted lithographed map ( 18 x 23 inches)This scarce pair of maps of Cuba and Havana, surrounded by views and historic scenes of the island, were originally published in Pierre Toussaint Frederic Miahle's (1810-1881)Viaje pintoresco al rededor de la Isla de Cuba, ca 1848, which was subsequently pirated by Bernardo May as Album Pintoresco de la Isla de Cuba in the 1850. In 1853 both Mialhe had unsuccessfully sued May for breach of copyright and demanded "the sequestration of the May-plagiarized albums, notification to the press to stop advertisements of said views,and 20,000 pesos as damages".May denied plagiarism on the grounds that ". after all, ladies in carriages, street sellers, churches, monuments, and landscapes were all there in full view to any artist who cared to paint them". The maps of Cuba and Havana were also copied from an 1847 map by Jose M. de la Torre. Excepcional joya pieza histórica artistica original de la Reina Isabel II, su pisapapeles personal en plata dorada con ocho miniaturas pintadas por Jerónimo Muñoz una firmada, uno de los miniaturistas de Isabel II. Adornado con cabujones de esmeraldas y vidrios simulando rubíes. Remata en corona real y lleva grabada la inscripción: "ANNO 1865" Los representados son: La Reina Isabel II, Francisco de Asís, el futuro rey Alfonso XII con toisón, la infanta Isabel " La Chata", las infantas Pilar, Paz y Eulalia y posiblemente M" de la Concepción. Posiblemente sea un regalo de la propia reina a los antepasados de los actuales propietarios, ya que fue una familia muy cercana a la reina que participó muy activamente en la restauración monárquica en la figura de Alfonso XII. Medidas: 20 cm x 11,5 x 9 cms. Se adjunta factura original de compra y origen de la misma.
Exceptional jewel, original artistic historical piece of Queen Isabel II, her personal paperweight in gilt silver with eight miniatures painted by Jerónimo Muñoz, one signed, one of Isabel II's miniaturists. Adorned with emerald cabochons and glass simulating rubies.
